    Downtime 6 - Sun Empty Downtime 6 - Sun

Post by RafV Mon Feb 08, 2021 10:10 am

Another evening of helping Sanji train his students is over. It’s been an especially harrowing session, with students whining. The entire session was filled with complaints in the style of ”Oooh noooo this stretching hurts a little bit. Boohoohoo” It left Sun in a foul mood. To get his mind off of the incessant whining, he decides to visit Shen’s unisex toilet fighting hall to enjoy some of the matches there.

After a short, uneventful trip, he arrives at the shady unisex toilet and enters to get to the arena. There’s still a few seats free. Just as Sun sits down, a fight between a human and an ork starts. The human and ork stare at each other for a few moments as they circle each other. Suddenly, the ork screams: ”Itog! Zog tog! Glor’duk!” The human is stupefied for a moment, trying to figure out what that means and gets an uppercut to his chin, lifting him a few inches off the floor and flying back several feet. For a few moments, it seems as if the human isn’t getting up anymore. Just as the ork is inches away from him, though, the human’s eyes open up with a flash: ”Don’t anger me!” he screams and throws a kick upwards, right into the ork’s family jewels. He, on his turn, grabs the weak spot as he topples over. The exchange continues for a while, cheap shot following cheap shot.

The fight isn’t quite what Sun expected. It’s the low-skilled fighters he tried to forget, all over again. Lucky for him, someone taps him on the shoulder. Looking around, he sees the most bland, average-looking man imaginable. The man gestures Sun to follow him. As anything is more interesting than newbie fights, Sun decides to do so. It doesn’t take long before the two arrive at a door Sun recognizes all too well. They’re at Shen’s office.

Sun enters and quickly greets Shen. She, on her turn, simply waves the formality away.

”Sun, Sun, Sun… A little birdie told me about your recent spat with… that SIN-vendor. I have a small task for you, if you would be so kind.”

Sun blinks a few times, not fully knowing how Shen knows about him taking care of that counterfeiter.

”Miss… How do you know about that?” he stammers.

Shen, slightly agitated by the question, simply replies: ”I already told you: A little birdie told me. Now, I’m a busy woman, so I’d rather cut to the chase here.”

Sun simply nods, rather uncomfortable about his little trip being known to the likes of Shen.

”As you no doubt know, a lot of people love fighting in my arena. Most are freelancers, quite like you, and like those two there.” she gives a quick, short nudge towards the screen where the human and ork are still going for the low-hanging fruit. ”Aside from freelancers, I also have the occasional fighter under contract. One such fighter still has quite a lot of fighting to do before my investment in him has been paid back. Sadly enough, he decided to stop showing up. As such, my little investment has become a cost.”

As Shen is talking, Sun keeps shuffling his feet, occasionally nodding, but not entirely understanding what she’s talking about or getting at.

”I’m running a business here. As every good business woman, I have to eliminate costs if possible. That’s where you come in. What I want from you, dear Sun, is to make this possible for me.”

Sun clearly still has no idea what Shen is talking about, and Shen notices it. With a deep sigh, she says:

”There’s an elf, Sasaki Ryuu. I need you to find him and bring him to me. It’s easy enough, right? I’m sure a big boy like you can do this. I have high hopes. You better live up to them!”

Making a mental note of the name, Sun asks: ”Do you know where I can find mr. Sasaki?”

Shen sakes her head. ”I’m sure you can figure that out.”

She then continues to talk general pleasantries for a short time before ushering Sun back out. Happy enough that there’s another fight going on now, Sun sits back on an empty seat, pondering how to get the info he needs.

This time, a dwarf and an elf are facing each other. With a guttural scream, the dwarf charges the elf. One hand behind his back, the elf wiggles some fingers of his visible hand and a fireball flies out towards the dwarf. The dwarf dives into a forward roll. The fireball barely misses him, brushing past his beard, scorching the tips. The little fellow’s face turns bright red, his eyes lighting up with a fiery rage.

    ”YOU SINGED MY BEARD!”

He storms towards the elf, who’s only a few feet away by now. Grabbing behind his opponent’s knees and pulling them towards him, the dwarf throws his weight against the elf’s waist. Both combatants fly back a few steps, only a couple of inches off the ground, before the elf lands on the ground, dwarf shoulder smashing into his solar plexus.

Sun enjoys the elf getting pummelled, and leaves the unisex toilet arena once the fight is over. His stomach is growling. Deciding to try out a new ramen place that opened up nearby, he sets himself at the long, U-shaped table and places an order. As his order arrives, an elderly dwarf sitting next to him looks into his bowl.

”Egg… Chicken… Soba… Good choice! Good choice indeed, young man!”

The old man nods approvingly, his beard nearly dipping into Sun’s meal.

”Thank you, mister!” Sun replies while looking into the man’s half-finished bowl. He has egg, chicken and… soba.

”Egg… Chicken… Soba… I see you have good taste too!” Sun says.

The old man grins ear to ear.

”Ya know, I don’t see many dwarfs in Mingmei. We got to stick together.”

”Are there really that small amount of dwarfs here?”

”As far as I know, there’s you, there’s good ol’ Ken back in Shinginko, and then there’s me. That’s all the dwarfs I know, and I’ve lived here all my life.”

Slurping up some noodles, Sun replies: ”I never heard of a good ol’ Ken back in Shinginko. Is he a dwarf as well?”

The old man slaps his face with the palm of his hand. ”You’re a tad bit daft, aren’t ya. I was just talking about the dwarfs I know!”

”Oh… Right, right. Sorry, sir! Please continue!”

Sun slurps up some more noodles as the two keep talking. The old man shares “Good ol’ Ken back in Shinginko” his contact info. He seems like the type of person who could help Sun find out mr. Sasaki’s whereabouts.

Sun takes the train to Shinginko, then follows the old man’s instructions, which lead him to an office block surrounded by banks. Even at this time of the day, there’s a constant passage of salarymen on the street, coming and going from all buildings and pouring in and out of elevators within office blocks. Sun’s casual clothes make him stand out slightly from all the business suits, but not more so than the occasional lost tourist that’s strolling around these streets.

Following the old man’s instructions further, Sun walks up to the reception desk and asks for mr. Tochigi. He gets a visitor badge and is told to wait for mr. Tochigi to pick him up. Roughly half an hour later, a dwarf in his late 30s shows up. He has white hair, combed over to one side, and a small, white beard. After letting a suited-up young dwarf out, he then turns to Sun and guides him to the 14th floor, to an office that’s more the size of an oddly-shaped broom closet than what Sun would have expected. He finally stops to look Sun up and down.

”Mister Dashou, was it? What can I do for you?”

”An old gentleman told me you can help me find an elf named Sasaki Ryuu.”

”Maybe I can. Maybe I can’t. Before we do business, though, mind if I ask you to do a small errand for me?”

Sun simply shrugs. ”I don’t see why not. What’s this errand?”

”Across the street is the Mingmei Bank of Commerce. I want you to go there and get something from my vault. It’s a small, sky blue envelope. The clerks will let you in with this note.”

Ken hands Sun a printed note.

”In the envelope is highly confidential information. Don’t take a peek, don’t show the envelope in public, just take it, put it in your pocket and bring it here. You got it?”

Sun nods, takes the note, and leaves the office. He crosses the street and walks into the Mingmei Bank of Commerce. Entering the bank, he picks a number and patiently waits his turn, right next to an old lady with her pet dog. The little dog starts barking at Sun while excitedly wagging its tail. The little old lady notices it instantly and turns to Sun:

”Hey there, young man. Looks like Lilly here likes you!”

She puts the dog closer to Sun, upon which the dog immediately starts licking Sun’s face. Wiping the doggy drool off his face, Sun backs off a little.

    ”You don’t say…,” he replies.

”It’s not often Lilly here likes people. She’s usually so reserved! The only time she took a liking to someone like this, was with my grandchild, little Sanji-kun. Oh, how she liked licking his chubby little cheeks! She absolutely adoooored that chubby little fellow. Little Sanji-kun is all grown up now, all big and famous and always too busy to even call his poor old gran-gran. How I miss that little chubby-chub when he still had time for his poor old gran-gran.”

Lucky for Sun, his number is called up by now. Walking up to the clerk, he shows the note Ken gave him. The clerk pushes a buzzer, telling Sun to come through a door on the side. Both walk down a hallway, passing several security cameras, until they reach the vaults. The bank clerk opens a specific vault door and steps aside.

As Sun looks into the vault, he sees several boxes, envelopes of varying sizes, and, at the very front, a small, sky blue envelope, which he takes and pockets. Nodding to the clerk that they’re done, the clerk closes the vault again and leads Sun back out. He fills out some paperwork the clerk presents him with, and leaves the building.

Quickly crossing the street again, Sun goes back in. Still carrying his visitor badge, he asks the receptionist to see mr. Tochigi again. The receptionist makes a quick call and not soon after, the dwarf appears at the lobby to guide Sun up to his office.

As they both have entered the office, Sun hands over the small, sky blue envelope. The white-haired dwarf takes the envelope and holds it up against the light. The contents is visible: just a small chip in there. The envelope itself turns bright red.

”Looks like you followed my instructions properly, mr. Dashou. I had no alerts of other items in the vault being moved, and the envelope arrived sealed and in its original color. We can do business together after all. You were looking for a certain elf named Sasaki Ryuu, right? While you were at the bank, I looked the man up. He seems to be living it up at Yuuenchi.”
Ken hands Sun the specific address where he can find his target. Sun wants to get up and thank mr. Tochigi, but quickly gets stared back into his seat.

”Mister Dashou. As you’re certainly aware, I’m in the business of information. That means if you provide me with information, I will pay you. If I provide you with information, you pay me. Since you got the information you were looking for, you owe me… this much.”

The dwarf taps a number on a calculator and turns it over to Sun, who grumbles for a moment, but pays.

”Happy to do business with you, mr. Dashou. Would you like a receipt?” the dwarf asks with a beaming smile. Sun grudgingly takes the receipt, says goodbye, followed by an awkward escorting out of the building, where he says goodbye once more.

This time, Sun takes the train to Yuuenchi district, where he then goes on to find the address he just got. He quickly arrives at a little, one-story house. There’s a white, picket fence in front. The opening of the fence is guarded by two statues of the same elf, leaning over to each other to make an arch. Inside the house, one room seems to have a light on.

Walking around the house to the back door, Sun notices it’s unlocked. He pulls the door, and…. It doesn’t open at all. Sun then pushes the door and quickly finds himself in a dark kitchen. Tiptoeing through the kitchen, Sun opens the door and enters a hallway. He makes his way through to a door from underneath light can be seen. He gives the door a slight nudge. With a loud creek, it opens up, revealing a living room with, at the other end, a surprised elf. Who is probably even more surprised than the elf, however, is Sun. Before him stands the elf matching Shen’s description. What also is matching, are the bra and panties the elf is wearing.

With a shriek, the elf yells: ”WHO ARE YOU?!”
”Pleased to meet you. I’m S… waaaait a minute I don’t need to tell you who I am. I just need to bring you to miss Shen!”

At hearing that name, the elf keeps one arm behind his back and wiggles the fingers of his other hand. The air in the room begins to simmer under the heat of the firebolt that flies towards Sun. With a forward shoulder roll, Sun barely dodges the flame, which brushes along the tip of his beard to finish by charring the door. Sun’s face turns bright red, his eyes lighting up with a fiery rage.

    ”YOU SINGED MY BEARD!”

He storms towards the elf, who’s only a few feet away by now. Grabbing behind his opponent’s knees and pulling them towards him, the dwarf throws his weight against the elf’s waist. Both combatants fly back a few steps, only a couple of inches off the ground, before the elf’s head smacks into a marble bust of himself. A loud THUD and crack are heard, and the elf goes limp. After a quick checkup, Sun visibly relaxes. Ryuu’s still breathing. He’s just out cold. Now all he has to do, is take the elf back to Shen. Of course, the elf can’t go outside wearing nothing but red lingerie. He quickly grabs a purple fur coat that’s hanging in the hallway and covers the limp body up with it.

While dragging the body out to the porch, Sun starts to wonder… He’s in Yuuenchi now and has to take the elf to Izakaya. That’s way too far to carry the guy. He could call Kin to come over with his car, but… Who’s he kidding? That call would probably just go to Cowboy HQ by accident instead. There’s only one solution: He has to take the train with the elf. He quickly checks the pockets of the fur coat, finding nothing but a wallet. Inside, he find a train card. The rest, he tosses aside.

Throwing Ryuu’s arm over his shoulder, Sun carries him onto the train to Izakaya. A dwarf dragging a passed-out elf in a purple fur coat is getting quite a few looks from the people on the train. A lot of people avert their eyes, not wanting to get mixed into whatever this is.

Two policemen on the train notice the odd scene, and work their way to Sun and Ryuu.

”Hey there, sonny! What’s wrong with your pal there?”

    ”Ehhh well… Sir… The thing is…. You see… Uhmmmm…. Well……”

The other policeman manages to reach the two as well by now.

”Whatsa matta, boy? Cat caught yer tongue? Huahuahua!”

    ”Uhmmm… Ehhhh… He… Ahhhh… Drinking…. Uhhhh… Out cold…. Errrr….”

The first policeman furrows his brow and gets in closer to inspect the elf. Sun’s face turns as pale as an Irishman’s buttocks.

”Jus leave the feller alone awready, will ya! Ya can see dese kids been havin a little frat fun! Ya remember when Jimmy and you were in the academy? That was sumfin else! Huahuahuahua!”
The 2nd cop jabs the first one in the ribs with his elbow. Clearly annoyed, the first cop eases up a little, keeping a bit more distance in case the purple-coated drunk pukes up. He stares at Sun and Ryuu for a few more moments. Beads of sweat start forming on Sun’s forehead like a pearly circlet before they stream down his face.

”Cam’on, we gatta go. Ya know how yer gal is when ya keep her waitin!”

Now the first cop wears the pearly tiara.

”Right, right. You’re absolutely right. This young man here is obviously just doing his fraternal duty making sure his friend here makes it home safe and sound. We don’t want to keep such fine young people from performing their civic duties, now do we? Let’s get off and call it a night!”

The two hurry off at the stop they by now arrived at. The doors close again and off the train goes once more.

The rest of the ride is rather uneventful. Sun finally drags Ryuu into Shen’s creepy unisex toilet and into Shen’s office. The poor guy must have some serious brain trauma, as he’s still out cold at this point. Shen nods approvingly.

”See? Didn’t I tell you you could do it? Isn’t it nice to be reliable? I’m sure it is! Now, if you made any expenses, you can handle it with my assistant over there.”

She gives a quarter of an inch nod to a guy who could easily be mistaken for a wardrobe. He turns his head a quarter of an inch towards Sun and gives the smallest of acknowledging nods. Shen then sends two more men in to drag the unfortunate elf away.

”Thank you for your assistance, Sun. If I ever need similar services, I’ll be sure to think of you!” she says to Sun, before ushering him out.

Downtime 6 - Sun Shen KenshinShen is mostly satisfied with Sun's job. The potential concussion on her fighter is a bit of a sore spot though. She mutters something about making the idiot stupider than he already was. The assistant handles payment for Sun's completion of the job. It seems that some unfortunate results in the ring have left Shen lacking on funds to pay with, but the assistant assures Sun that she always pays her debts and provides him with a small velvet-lined box containing what appears to be a severed hand with wicks coming out of each of its fingertips. The assistant informs Sun that it is a powerful magical artifact of some value. Once the wicks are lit, its power functions for one hour or until the flames go out, whichever comes first. As long as the hand is active, the bearer can open any door no matter how it has been sealed and bypass any physical security measure with ease. Unfortunately, it can only be lit once.

All this Urban Brawl money is burning a hole in Sun's pocket. He's thinking... "What can I do with this that benefits the most amount of people?"

As he's strolling through the street, he sees homeless people digging through the trash, looking for scraps. A bit further, he sees beggars on the street. Yet a bit further, he walks past an old lady dressed in rags and hollow cheeks. It then dawns on Sun: Maybe he can start a soup kitchen!

Using his prize money, he gathers a big soup pot, a cooking stove, some benches and tables, and everything else he needs. He then goes around, looking to hire some grannies to get ingredients and do the cooking, since he has no clue how to make soup.

Naive as he is, setting up an entire soup kitchen is a lot harder than Sun expects. He needs a location, permits, food safety training, custodial staff, insurance, regular food shipments, cooking equipment, and a countless list of other things that he didn't think of, not the least of which being the ongoing cost of staffing and supplying a soup kitchen. It quickly becomes apparent that he is in over his head in planning this and while discussing this with potential volunteers, he is provided with a book to read through to get an idea of all the things he'll need to get this going in a manner that is successful and not ultimately doomed to failure. It is certainly doable, but it seems like this will take A LOT of his time and money to get off the ground.

Going through the book, Sun scratches his head. He's wondering how helping people out got so complicated. He studies the book front to back and back, then again, and once more. The concepts are slowly starting to sink in, but without actual usage, it remains vague and slightly mysterious. Every day, he tries to apply a bit. First, he goes through the proper forms, and hands them in. He then makes sure all health and other regulations are met. He then goes on to make sure the grannies he hired are up to speed on all the rules and regulations. Every night, he checks the book to make sure he got everything taken care of in the way the book suggests. He keeps a list of all the purchases he made, categorizing them. He makes a list of all the staff, their tasks and contact details, and makes sure to document everything, just like the book suggests.

With now more of a plan than, "Hire grannies to give out food" Sun is able to start navigating the various logistics issues and bureaucracies involved in putting a soup kitchen together. It's a lot of work, but rewarding. At least spiritually anyway, because it's not financially rewarding at all. It's a money pit. But given that Sun doesn't have a whole lot of things to spend money on, it fits him. It takes pretty much takes all month to make initial arrangements, but Sun eventually opens up a soup kitchen and volunteers at it. While there, he notices a familiar dwarven face in line: Niku Marekko.

"Here ya go, kid. Yeah, got a bit sidetracked by a game of Urban Brawl I had to prepare for. But tell you what, we can go and play ball tomorrow if you want!"

Downtime 6 - Sun Niku Marekko"I can get helping your friends out. Must be good friends for you to risk your life for them." Niku shrugs and says, "But I dunno man. My boss got busted so I've had a lot of free time. Course it also means we're back to cup ramen most nights. But eh, I'm sure I'll find something else to do. I guess I'd be up for anything that doesn't risk my life."

Sun pats Niku on the shoulder.
"Exactly. Don't risk your life. Your mother would be worried sick if you did. I'll keep an eye out for something safer than with your busted boss, alright? No matter how you look at it, if there'd be a rival gang that wants your boss to pay, you'd be risking your life too."

Scratching his beard for a moment, Sun adds:

"Hey, do you like wrestling? I can get you in to see a wrestling match with the Green Machine, if you want!"

Downtime 6 - Sun Niku Marekko"Wrestling? Like fat dudes in loin cloths pushing each other out of a sand ring? Never watched before. Dunno who the Green Machine is. Sounds like a foreigner. Not that it's a surprise. There's plenty of foreigners in wrestling. It's easier for them to get fat than Desians. All those hamburgers they get to eat. I guess I wouldn't be against a free show anyway."

Sun just chuckles at the fat foreigner crap. During the evening, he takes Niku to see the whole wrestling show. He gets the best seats he can find. As the show goes on, he explains to Niku what certain moves are and how they work, whenever an actual move that's not just for show is applied. At the end, he takes the kid to meet The Green Machine.

Downtime 6 - Sun Niku MarekkoNiku is totally not expecting what he is shown but has no complaints either. Besides being a completely different sport, the fact that it features scantily clad women only adds to his enjoyment of it. After the show Miyako waves at Sun and says, "Hey Sun! Thanks for coming out to see the show. Who's the kid?"

Niku's jaw drops a bit as he sees how friendly Miyako is to Sun and pats him in the side repeatedly as he says, "You KNOW her?"

To Niku, Sun replies: "She's my girlfriend, so yeah, I know her."

To Miyako, he says: "This is the kid from the Big Brother program I'm looking after. He's a bit down due to having lost his job, so I thought watching some sports might cheer him up."

    He then turns to both:
"Niku, this is Miyako. Miyako, this is Niku."

Downtime 6 - Sun Niku MarekkoNiku makes a face that is somewhere between disgust and amazement at the announcement that Sun and Miyako are dating. "Girlfriend?" he says, unable to articulate much more than that.

Miyako chuckles and says to Sun, "Cute kid." She then says to Niku, "Hello Niku. Would you like an autograph? Maybe a selfie of me lifting you over my head or something?"

    Niku says, "Um... selfie?"

Miyako says, "Selfie it is," as she takes his commlink. She's about to hand it off to Sun but then decides it's probably not the best thing both for camera angle reasons as well as his general capabilities with tech. She snaps some shots of her lifting Niku up with one arm, then hands the commlink to Niku so he can take some selfie shots of his own. "I really appreciate you guys coming out. You wild and crazy guys got any other plans for the night?"

Niku and Sun look at each other, both obviously thinking: "Wild? This guy?!"

They both turn back to Miyako. Sun shrugs. "Niku has to be back home later on, but we don't really have any plans besides watching the show here."

Downtime 6 - Sun Niku MarekkoMiyako chuckles and says, "Well, I've got to go shower up and get ready to head out, so I'll let you take the guy home. If you want to grab a bite afterward, let me know. There's a yakiniku viking place up the street I was thinking of hitting up for a late dinner."

"Sure thing! I'm starving! Gonna feed the kid here first. He has some bread from the soup kitchen, but it's nicer if he has something more than that, and some he can take home for his mom. I'll meet you up at the viking place later on!"

Sun goes out again, and asks what Niku wants to eat.

Downtime 6 - Sun Niku MarekkoMiyako nods and bids the pair farewell, promising to meet up at the place in about an hour. When offered food, Niku smirks and says, "I get anything? Monster wagyu burger!" His eyes light up, clearly excited at the prospect.

It's been only the week before that Sun heard about the place, and he knows it's not as cheap as a bowl of ramen, but it's also not going to break the bank. He takes Niku to get his monster wagyu burger, and orders something, under slight guidance from Niku, for the kid's mom as well, making sure both don't eat just a greasy, artery-clogging burger, but they get enough vegetables and vitamins as well.
