That's the 4th edition text.   It may have changed in 5th edition, but of note is that the spirit can sustain a spell for it's force per service, until it's out of services.

There is no interrupt between services.

An Ally Spirit has unlimited services.

That's as opposed to Spell Binding:

Similar to Spell Sustaining, a magician can also engage a

bound spirit for Spell Binding, maintaining a spell for even longer

periods. Doing so, however, irrevocably depletes the spirit’s

Force. A spirit can maintain a spell for a number of days equal

to its Force. Each day, or part thereof, permanently reduces

the spirit’s Force by 1. When its Force reaches 0, it disappears,

completely consumed—which explains why spirits dislike this

service and will grow reluctant to aid a magician who abuses

    spirits this way. The

    magician can release

    the spirit before it

    runs out of Force in

    order to end the spell

    ahead of schedule,

    but the spirit is still

    free of its bond. Spell

    Binding uses up all

    of a bound spirit’s remaining

    services.

Oh, the spell sustaining for 4 turns was my hazy brain thinking 2 services from a force 2 spirit.

I was eating dinner, which is why you got uneditited text from the 4th edition books... which is why the column got thinner on the spellbinding part, it wraps around a picture.

In practice I'd not do this past a few hours in any case.   Normally, anything I'd want sustained that way would come from a Spirit of Man.  That's what the Samurai was going to be for that I failed to summon at the beginning of the run.

In 5th, it just says this:

Spell sustaining: You can have a spirit sustain a spell for you after you cast it. It takes the –2 dice pool penalty per sustained spell, instead of you. It can’t do this forever— only for its Force in Combat Turns for each service you spend on spell sustaining.

It says nothing about the mage being able to take it back. But that is the rule for a normal spirit. There is nothing written about how to handle it with an ally spirit, which is why I say, to avoid a situation where an ally spirit is basically sustaining an infinite number of spells indefinitely when there is clearly a spirit function that is to their detriment for sustaining it days at a time, it makes sense that either they do it one time then the spell ends, or as a house rule you do a conjuring check (no drain involved) to see how many times they can do it before giving up on the spell.

Otherwise imagine there is some corp out there with a force one ally spirit chained up in the basement forever sustaining increase logic spells on every worker in the building to boost their productivity or something stupid like that. It would quickly be really crazy.

I agree, as written it's too vague.

I'd suggest one spell per 2 force, basically off setting the penalty, just to start.

It's odd that they have apparently removed the line about being able to take the spell back.

In the 4th edition text on ally spirits they didn't really describe the ability at all, except to mention it was one of the things you could do with your unlimited services.  This is clearly too abuseable, which is why I asked how that would work.

I had actually assumed that each round consumed a point of force, and that they didn't even like to do the sustaining, much less the binding, but that's actually the 3rd edition way it worked I believe.  You could get them to do it for multiple services but you had to send them back and recall them between each cycle to replenish their force.

As it stands, I'll probably never use the ability.

At 2 rounds, it does not last long enough to bother with, especially if the spell drops and I have to recast it again, getting different results and suffering drain each time.

The Conjuring test might make it useful in an extreme situation,  like maybe healing, but the things I'd need it for most like Analyze Device or Improved Reflexes it's just not workable.

Not at her current force, but a single combat really doesn't last all that many rounds. Average people tend to get 1-2 passes. Faster people can get 3-4. 5 if they are super maxed out and lucky. A handful of combat turns lasts longer than you think.
